About this course
MCOM 118: Metaverse, Society & World-Building

Have you played Roblox, Fortnite, or Minecraft? What about any of the 3D game platforms, such as Second Life, Sims, Decentraland, Animal Crossing, Horizon Worlds, VR Chat, and The Sandbox? All these are components of the evolving Metaverse? These are spaces where you can interact with people globally at concert venues, sports events and even fashion shows. As virtual reality and other emerging technologies increasingly become more cost efficient, every aspect of life will exist virtually. Maybe you have attended some of these events? Maybe you are curious about what everyone means when they talk about the Metaverse.

This course will introduce you to the concepts driving the Metaverse – a mix of science fiction, communication theory, media studies and cultural studies. Many of you have seen the movie Ready Player One or Matrix and probably wonder how the Metaverse compares. At this point in modern history, society is on the cusp of rapid technological change, propelled by AI’s influence, and the global rise of Generation M (Metaverse), who will help to redefine every aspect of our world.

What will that mean for society? Who will lead this new world to ensure diversity and equitable allocation of resources? Those are merely some of the questions asked in this course.

Students will learn by engaging in group discussions and collaborating in these virtual environments. If you like playing games, experiencing new technologies and learning about their impact on your future, this is the course for you.
